Ho Chi Minh City Book Street Guide: What to Expect at Nguyen Van Binh Street

Ho Chi Minh City Book Street sits right in the center of Saigon. You can walk its whole length in a few minutes. The street sits between the Central Post Office and Independence Palace. Trees shade most of the walkway. The city noise fades the moment you step in.

You'll find bookshops, cafés, and small souvenir stalls here. Entry costs nothing. Most visitors stay for under an hour. The street fits easily into a District 1 walking day. Do you collect stamps, postcards, or second-hand books?

Our Experience at Ho Chi Minh City Book Street

We arrived at Ho Chi Minh City Book Street around noon. Lunchtime in Saigon usually means punishing heat, so I braced myself. The trees changed everything. Their canopy keeps the street noticeably cooler than the open plazas around the cathedral, and we walked the whole stretch without rushing for air-conditioning.

My real mission that day was Little Cats Studio. I collect stamps in a stamp book, and this shop was the stop I'd planned the whole walk around. I left with new pages filled and a very happy grin. Stamp collectors, mark this one on your map.

After that, we took photos and drifted in and out of the shops. The stalls carry Vietnamese and English books, stationery, notebooks, and handmade Dó paper goods. Most titles are in Vietnamese, though you'll spot English books and plenty of Vietnamese language learning guides if you want to pick up a few phrases.

We spent about 15 to 30 minutes here. Beyond browsing, photos, and a coffee stop, there's little else to do on the street itself. That's fine. Book Street works best as a pause between bigger sights, and it's walking distance from several of them.

Is it worth going? In my opinion, yes. It's free, it's shaded, and it gives you a calm half hour in the busiest part of the city.

About Ho Chi Minh City Book Street

Locals call it Đường Sách Nguyễn Văn Bình. The pedestrian street runs from Hai Ba Trung Street to the plaza around Notre-Dame Cathedral, with the Central Post Office right beside it. Independence Palace stands a short walk away.

The Book Street officially opened on January 9, 2016, with the aim of promoting a reading habit in the city. It now hosts stalls from more than 25 publishers and has held close to 1,200 events, including book signings and cultural exchanges.

The road itself carries a long history. During the French colonial period, it went by Hong Kong Street. Officials renamed it Cardis in 1897 and Nguyen Hau in 1955. In 2000, it took its current name after Nguyen Van Binh, a respected Vietnamese intellectual.

Two cafés make good rest stops. Phương Nam Book Café sits on the street itself, and a Highlands Coffee branch stands right beside it.
