Nemiranda Arthouse in Angono, Rizal: A Visit to the House of the Legends
Angono has long held its reputation as the art capital of the Philippines, and a quick afternoon in this town will show you exactly why. We did not plan the stop at Nemiranda Arthouse. It was a detour on the way somewhere else, the kind that ends up being the best part of the day.
Our Experience
We pulled up around 2:30 in the afternoon. From the outside, the place looked closed. The facade gives little away, and if you did not know what you were looking for, you might drive right past it. The trick is simple: ring the doorbell. Someone will come to the gate and let you in.
We were welcomed and toured by one of Mr. Miranda's children, Keiye Miranda (if we are remembering the name correctly), who walked us through the galleries and talked us through the works on display.
This is not a place with laminated placards and recorded audio guides.
It feels more like being invited into a family home that also happens to hold some of the most vivid Filipino art you have ever seen up close.
The tour ran about 45 minutes and covered the full house. Most of the work is by Mr. Nemiranda himself, though pieces by other artists are featured as well, primarily toward the front of the gallery.
His work spans painted wooden carvings in quirky, vivid detail and large canvas paintings that pull you in from across the room. The style he is known for, which he calls "imaginative figurism," captures rural Filipino life, folklore, and the textures of everyday experience with a warmth that is hard to describe and easy to feel.
A few things we noticed: some of the pieces looked like they had been on display for a long time with minimal protection from foot traffic, and a handful of paintings were stacked at the side of the room rather than hung.
The lighting in certain sections could use some work, and a few areas had accumulated dust. These are small things, but worth mentioning if you are visiting with an eye for conservation.
There are also some nude and explicit artworks in the collection. Good to know if you are visiting with younger kids.
We also learned that the arthouse runs ongoing art classes for students who want to develop their practice. A small cafe sits inside the gallery if you want to linger after the tour.
About Nemiranda Arthouse
Nemiranda Arthouse is the home and gallery of Nemesio "Nemi" R. Miranda Jr., a celebrated Filipino artist based in Angono, Rizal. Known as the "House of the Legends," the arthouse was built on his passion for art and serves as a showcase for his own work alongside pieces by his five children, all of whom are artists in their own right.
The space is a converted house with multiple galleries across different levels, each carrying a distinct theme. You move from colorful, fiesta-like wooden sculptures on the ground floor to paintings depicting Filipino customs and beliefs, then up to religious artworks on the second level. The variety keeps the tour interesting from room to room.
The arthouse also features sculptures, a Higantes display, and works by other local artists, making it a broader look at Angono's creative community than you might expect from a single family gallery.

Planning Your Visit
Getting there: Nemiranda Arthouse is located in Barangay San Roque, Angono, Rizal. Street parking is the only option available, and spots are limited, so factor that in if you are arriving by car.
QUICK TIP:
Ring the doorbell even if the place looks closed from outside. The gallery does not always have an obvious open sign, but someone is usually inside and will come to assist you.
This works well as part of a broader Angono art itinerary. The town has several galleries and heritage sites within close distance of each other, so a half-day in the area goes a long way.
The art demonstration requires a minimum of 10 persons. If you are visiting as a smaller group and want the demo experience, coordinate with the gallery in advance to see if you can join an existing schedule.
